Definition 5
(Electronic-LEARNING) “Electronic learning (or e-Learning or eLearning) is a type of education where the medium of instruction is computer technology. In some instances, no in-person interaction takes place. E-learning is used interchangeably in a wide variety of contexts. In companies, it refers to the strategies that use the company network to deliver training courses to employees. In the USA, it is defined as a planned teaching/learning experience that uses a wide spectrum of technologies, mainly Internet or computer-based, to reach learners. Lately in most Universities, e-learning is used to define a specific mode to attend a course or programmes of study where the students rarely, if ever, attend face-to-face for on-campus access to educational facilities, because they study online.” (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elearning, from 29.10.2008)

Definition 6
One of the most confusing aspects of eLearning is that nobody knows what it is. We do know the “e” doesn’t stand for “electronic”. The”e” in eLearning would be better defined as Evolving or Everywhere or Enhanced or Extended Based on this survey from a very respected company, there are many people that have the wrong definition of eLearning. The survey asked 259 training managers at Fortune 500 firms what tools they use to create e-learning content. The top choice was PowerPoint with 66% of responses. Next was Microsoft Word with 63%, Macromedia’s Dreamweaver 61% and Flash 47%. (Respondents could choose more than one.) Just taking a Word document or PowerPoint presentation and doing a “Save as HTML” does NOT mean you have created eLearning. Just taking a F2F presentation and presenting it using a web conference is not eLearning. We define eLearning as … A learning environment supported by continuously evolving, collaborative processes focused on increasing individual and organizational performance. Effective eLearning thrives at the nexus of web usability, communication, relationship, document, and Knowledge Management tools (source: http://managersforum.com/eLearning/Index.htm, from 29.10.2008)

Definition 7
According to the Task of the Week, todays blog is about definitions of eLearning. Last lesson we thought about what good or bad eLearning is, but without already knowing what eLearning is. Now follow some possible definitions: Werner Stangl, Professor for Psychology at the University of Linz defines eLearning as a special form of computer based learning. Characteristics for this special form firstly is, that also the systems of learning as well as the materials of learning are availible in a digitalised way. Secondly, materials and system are multi- or hypermedial, which means (if I understood right), that organisation and objects are linked together. Another aspect is the interaction between Teacher, Scholar and System and that everything is availible online for the user. literature: Werner Stangl, eLearning, E-Learning, Blended Learning, http://www.stangl-taller.at/ARBEITSBLAETTER/LERNEN/Elearning.shtml A definition by staff of the Zürcher Hochschule Winterthur sees eLearning as a fusion of education and internet. Inside this fusion, range and interposition of knowledge are realised through the use of modern technology and media. The settings of learning are based on web services, teachers and scholars can stay and act in different places, areal as well as temporal, and even the communication between both can be synchronous or asynchronous. For example, they can use chat as a synchronous, or email as asynchronous way of communication. literature: Werner Stangl, eLearning, E-Learning, Blended Learning, http://www.stangl-taller.at/ARBEITSBLAETTER/LERNEN/Elearning.shtml Another definition can be found at the University of Hildesheim. There, eLearning is described as a process, which is supported by technology of information and communication. There can be a mix that contains information, activity, workflow, people and technics. Depending on the demand and place, where eLearning is used, there weightage can be different. Also the roles, activities and liabilities can change, depending on the used model of eLearning. http://www.uni-hildesheim.de/de/9808.htm To me, this definition appears as a good one, because it shows a kind of complexity where different possibilities for the use of eLearning appear and also different settings, and what follows as consequence of those settings are mentioned. eLearning here is not, as one can here often, reduced to `learning with computer and internet´.
Definition 8
eLerning is described as an interactive communication that takes place between a program imparting knowledge and the learner. Furthermore, it comprises all types of learning using computer, network and satellite technology to impart knowledge.

Definition 9
On http://agelesslearner.com/intros/elearning.html you find:
” eLearning is:
- The convergence of the Internet and learning, or Internet-enabled learning.
- The use of network technologies to create, foster, deliver, and facilitate learning, anytime and anywhere.
- A phenomenon delivering accountability, accessibility, and opportunity to allow people and organizations to keep up with the rapid changes that define the Internet world.
- A force that gives people and organizations the competitive edge to allow them to keep ahead of the rapidly changing global economy.
With good design and delivery, e-learning does all these things. But, at its heart, it is, simply, learning. Too bad most interpretations focus on the technology (the “e”) and not on the learning. e-Learning has to keep the people it’s designed for in mind. How do we learn? How do we acquire and retain skills and information to help us develop? Only when we address individual learning styles can the “e” in e-learning factor in. Then the technical side—the electronic delivery—can be adapted to the learner. Maybe the e should actually follow the word learning. “
In my opinion, this definition allows anyone to get an impression about what eLearning is. It doesn’t matter, if you know a kot about eLearning or not. This definition doesn’t just tell people, what eLearning is, it also describes what to be aware of, using it. It is so important to keep that in mind - we still need to know how to learn, we still need to learn… I think, thera are a lot of people out there, not reminding all those things. Of course, using eLearning is a good way, but we can’t forget the stuff around. So, that’s why I really like this definition. I doesn’t just include the technical side.
Definition 10
The first definition which I found and which called my attention, after trying some links, was on ITWissen, sorry it is in german, if i have the time I will try to translate the definition into English.
eLearning (electronical learning)
(Source: http://www.itwissen.info/definition/lexikon/E-Learning-eLearning-electronic-learning.html, from 31.10.2008)
To me this definition is really interesting, mainly the first sentence, E-Learning is the interactive communication beside the knowledge trasporting program and the learner,
which in most cases is only one person. I’ve never heard something similar before and the first thing that was emerging into my head, was the FIlm Matrix,
because of the symbiosis between the humans and the machines. In my opinion it is the best definition I’ve seen so far, because it is including all of the
facts which I’m connecting to the term eLearning. In fact, if you want to get a deeper look and really want to understand everything related to the term eLearning,
you’ll have to read a lot more, because of the various scopes which are related to eLearning and which are constructing it.
The next definition I found was on the pebblePad of the University of Gloucestershire.
What do we mean by e-learning?
{…}
The use of electronic technologies in an integrated and directed way to encourage students to engage actively with their learning.
{…}
(Source: http://pebblepad.glos.ac.uk/viewasset.aspx?oid=6844&type=thought#linksanchor, from 31.10.2008)
Not really a defintion, but I found the sentence "The use of electronic technologies in an integrated and directed way to encourage students to engage actively with their learning."
interesting.
Can eLearning really do something like that? “…encourage the students to engage actively with the learning.”
What has to be done that this could work? What about digital immigrants, natives and retiree, I mean there are so man things you have to be aware of.
Different learning styles (audio, visual, kinetic). Different generations. I think I’m stoping right here, because this list could go on and on.
Definition 11
i would say in "one" word: web-connected-computerbased-learning-environment That includes: - computer based learning like tutorials study software, etc - blending learning mixture between physical presence learning and corresponding softwaremodules - microlearning bundle of different small e-learning contents such as posts in a blog - social networking Sharing a datasphere like a wiki or a link page such as del.icio.us - videoconferences - chat discussions - virtual classrooms look at SL - shared contents online Platforms such as netzspannung.org or - learning on platforms like wikis, blogs,or something like educommsy etc. but also digital game based learning this video is about learning and teaching in SL:
Definition 12
