Meyer - Zwischen Kanal und Lebensmittel (In between channel and means to life) (Abstract)

Torsten Meyer asks for what a pedagogical medium is. There might be fundamental mistakes as Werner Sesink suggests in how the educational system is dealing with the so called "new medium", since some misinterpret it as the continuation of common education just transfered on new instruments. The more it is some kind of reorganisation of the system. See Discussion page

fundamental questions of communication, chief business of education

For Vilem Flusser the transfer of information from one generations memory to the nexts appears as the chief business of education. While J. Friedrich Herbart says that this business is construction of the world which therefore closely connects education with media. Even more, education without media is not yet thinkable. this device

We are confronted with the choice to either use this device to carry on our archaic methods of publishing or we might step into a new dimension of thought by using "this device", the "new medium" for changing our way of thought. Thus this device can no more be excluded from education we have to adapt our curriculum with a theory of current tecnology. Therefor we need an appropriate understanding of what the idea of medium is. See Discussion page The term "Medium" often is understood in the simple way of a channel which lies inbetween recipient and emitter. Another way of understanding medium would be that of a social environment, a milieu. The medium seems to be something in which you may be. Meyer referes to a commercial spot in which Boris Becker finally expressed, that he would be in the internet. We can think of this medium as a social medium in which processes happen or information occures and is transported, like the physical medium in which a chime occures and is transmitted. This milieu like medium in which one exists, which seems to be without alternatives, is not to be recognised as medium from within. From within it necessarily appears to be the whole, like the cave apears as the whole in Plato's Parable of the Cave. Everybody is socialised by media inter alia. At the one hand, this medium is considered as a set of cognitive, communicative and social conditions, as a reference system for social deeds, in short as culture. At the other hand this reference system may be considered dependent on the mediator and the means of presentation. Thus it becomes clear, that the mentioned set of conditions, the culture is shaped, developed by people.

mediology

Mediology deals with the interface/the interdependendy (I would say this is the better translation. Christina) between the symbolic, the social and the tecnical. Since technological development always is connected to cultural development it is to be forseen that the new medium will have had influence on our culture. To which extend, today you may only guess. McLuhan and Debray distinguish culture-historical ages by their means of tecnical information transfer (e.g. logosphere, graphosphere, videosphere, hypersphere). See Discussion page

An example is shown in the video, where the 'medival helpdesk' explains the usage of a book. Considering the debating about web2.0 it becomes clear that web1.0 only was an atempt to adopt the book onto the computer. With web2.0 begins a new kind of knowledge usage. The web is now a tool for rather editing knowledge than transporting it.See Discussion page

epistemological barrier

We can not understand the thought of other ages. Though we can for example imagine what consequences result from living in an oral culture, we can not understand what it feels like to live in an oral culture. Neither can we understand what it will feel like to live in a future mediasphere. Because we can only assume what media will be like in future, what our needs will be and how media will be developed, we may only assume that it will be in a constant state of move.

Transmissions

Considering "digital Natives" to be different in the way they think, act and know, we may assume that "the Theory of Education of Humans"See Discussion page will get in motion. Considering the difference between communication (in space) and transmissition (in time) it is transmission what makes culture possible. The "nature of knoledge" is changed by technology. At first, knoledge is altered by informatisated society, second it must be quantifyable and third it becomes independet from education, the "building" of intellect, it becomes a thing, commodity.

Education - A big story? - Translation: Grand Narrative - Referring to Lyotard - Postmodernism

Is "the Theory of Education of Humans" See Discussion page a child of the graphosphere? Will it adopt to videosphere or hypersphere? Will it change the institutions of transmission like family, school or university?
